@ previous comment: that's pretty logical. that's the whole point of use flags (i use the same flags to run mldonkey on my server without problems)

for people that can't find the ini files: start the service and stop it again. all missing ini files will be created with the proper defaults.

In an attempt to limit the number of dependencies automatically installed for my mldonkey server (controlled by remote computer), I used the following flags which reduced the dependency to just ocaml:
-X, -opengl, -gtk, -gtk2, -gnome

So far, so good. I've been able to connect from another computer on the LAN via the web interface. After importing an updated server.met from the web, I've been able to connect to ed2k servers with High ID's. I've also added a torrent that started receiving data.
